Second Year Stats

On April 7th, the girls had their second year well visit. Here are the stats:

Sage
Height: 31 inches (5th percentile)
Weight: 24 pounds, 12 ounces (33rd percentile)
Clothes size: Mostly 18 month and some 24 month

Lucy
Height: 30.75 inches (4th percentile - woo hoo!)
Weight: 19 pounds, 8 ounces (0 percentile)
Clothes size: 6-12 month

Dr. Gollnick, our regular pediatrician, is monitoring Lucy's progress with Dr. Dietrich, her developmental pediatrician, and Dr. Maisel, her pediatric gastroenterologist. Dr. Gollnick is reassured by Lucy's continued weight gain along her own growth curve, her hitting developmental milestones just fine, and the results of a recent bone growth study. The bone growth study was an x-ray of the girls' hands (we had one completed on Sage, too, given she's an identical twin and therefore an excellent case control). Both x-rays showed the girls' bones to be three months behind their actual age (they can tell this by which joints in the fingers have fused). This is a good thing as the girls were 10 weeks early, so three months behind is pretty close to their gestational age. Moreover, it shows that there's growth potential in their bones and they just need time to reach that potential. So we'll continue to work with Dr. Maisel to treat Lucy for reflux and see if that helps her to gain more weight.

Meanwhile, Lucy continues on her dream diet of high fat, calorie dense foods. The essence of this diet is to take everything you've ever learned about how to cut unnecessary fats and calories out of your diet and reverse it. Butter on everything - check. Whole milk, whole milk yogurt, and lots and lots of ice cream - check. Fortify whole milk with Carnation Instant Breakfast - check. Sausage, scramble eggs with whole milk - check. French toast made with heavy cream - check. Guacamole, peanut butter and cheese - check, check, check. For anyone who wonders why there are few pictures of Brian and I on the web, let's just say that Lucy's diet continues to be extraordinarily effective for helping the two of us gain weight. We are working on it, but as any toddler parent knows, it is difficult to keep our diets separate and to not help clean off plates at the end of a meal - particularly when its as delicious as French toast made with heavy cream.

Developmentally, they continue to shine. The each easily have over a hundred words. They run, they climb, they walk on balance beams, they identify animals and body parts galore. They finally have hair.
